Every LED work light is sold with numbers. Most of them mean almost nothing on a shop floor. Here is the four-number test that separates a paper flashlight from a real beam.

A supplier sends a spec sheet: 5,000 lumens, 6500K, IP67, 60W. It looks perfect. Then you mount it, fire it up, and the beam lands like a floodlight at a sports event — everywhere except the part.

Here is what the numbers actually mean, and which one to look at first when you buy your next LED machine work light.

1. Lumens: The Total, Not the Useful

Lumens is the total light a lamp gives off in every direction. It is the number on the front of the box. It is also the easiest number to inflate, because it says nothing about the direction, the beam, or the part.

Two lamps can both claim 3,000 lumens. One throws a tight, usable spot on the cutter; the other washes the whole shop in glare. Same lumen count, totally different job. The spec sheet will never show you this — only the beam pattern will.

2. Lux: The One That Matters

Lux is the light actually landing on a surface — and it is the number your eyes work with. One lux is one lumen spread over one square meter. The same lamp can deliver 3,000 lux at 0.5 m and 100 lux at 3 m.

Rule of thumb for machining: you want 800–1,500 lux on the part surface. That is enough to read chip patterns and surface finish, without making the workshop look like an operating room.

When a supplier will not tell you the lux at a working distance — only the total lumens — that is the first red flag.

3. CRI: The Color of Truth

CRI (Color Rendering Index) measures how honestly a light renders colors, from 0 to 100. Sunlight scores near 100; cheap LED strips can score below 70.

  • CRI ≥ 90: true metal colors, easy to spot surface defects and heat-treat tints. Worth paying for.
  • CRI 80–89: acceptable for general bench work, but don't trust it for final inspection.
  • CRI < 80: cheap to buy, cheap to regret. Every part looks a little dead, and defects ride along under the same dim disguise.

Some suppliers game CRI with marketing tweaks. The honest test is simple: bring a piece of brass and a piece of aluminum to the booth, and see if they look like brass and aluminum.

4. Color Temperature: Choose the Shift, Not the Showroom

A neutral 4,000–5,000K is the workhorse of the shop: bright enough to see chips and edges, soft enough that your eyes don't complain at 3 AM. Cooler isn't automatically better — 6,500K that looks crisp in a catalog can feel like a headache at hour six.

On a real shop floor, the number that matters is lux on the part — the beam, the distance, and the shadow it casts.

5. Beam Angle and Glare: The Part of the Spec Nobody Prints

A work light without a beam pattern is a floodlight. What you want is a beam that reaches the part and no further — the narrower the useful spread, the less bounce, glare and eye strain.

  • Narrow beam (10–30°): best for a fixed spot, long distance to the part.
  • Medium beam (30–60°): the sweet spot for most CNC and turning work.
  • Wide beam (60°+): for inspection stations and wide fixtures, but watch out for glare.

Angling the lamp is not cheating — a 45° angle throws the beam at the part instead of your face, and doubles the effective contrast on a shiny surface.

6. Reading a Spec Sheet in 60 Seconds

Forget the marketing page. Look for these five lines and ignore everything else:

  1. Lux at a stated distance — the only brightness number that matters.
  2. CRI — 90 or better, no excuses.
  3. Beam angle — a number, not a hero image.
  4. Driver dimming and voltage tolerance — your spindle is not a clean power source.
  5. IP rating on the head — the only part that ever touches coolant.
